CalMax Kids

For years, kids have been drinking milk for strong bones.  Doctors recommend milk and dairy products for their calcium content.  But recently, pediatricians have been encouraging parents to ensure their kids are eating salmon, almonds and other foods that are rich in magnesium.  According to a recent study presented at the Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) annual meeting, magnesium may also play a vital role in bone health.  This is because calcium and magnesium are a team of nutrients that work best when taken together.  Doctors concluded that the amount of magnesium children consumed and absorbed were key predictors of how much bone children had.

The Institute of Medicine (IOM), which sets the U.S. government’s official nutrient guidelines, recommends children should get a minimum of this much calcium and magnesium per day:

  • Ages 1-3: 500 milligrams calcium, 65 milligrams magnesium
  • Ages 4-8: 800 milligrams, 110 milligrams of magnesium
  • Ages 9-18: 1,300 milligrams, 350 milligrams of magnesium
